A woman reviewing her xray with a dentist at Periodontal Health Professionals in Marlton, NJBone grafts are widely performed surgeries recommended by dental professionals. They are commonly recommended to treat problems with the temporomandibular (TMJ) joint.

The umbrella term for issues with the TMJ is known as TMD: temporomandibular dysfunction (or disorder). TMD problems or issues can arise through trauma, whether by being struck during a sporting event or an automobile accident. Symptoms may include: not being able to swallow or chew without discomfort or in some cases not being able to speak clearly.

With a bone graft applied to the TMJ, these symptoms are quickly reduced, and normal function is restored. If a patient feels they are suffering from TMJ problems, they can contact us today at Periodontal Health Professionals, where our team of professionals can provide the assessment and treatment necessary.

What Is a Bone Graft?

Taken from an area of the patient's body that is not infected or compromised, a bone graft is a small bit of tissue that can then be applied to the problem area.

Adding bone mass to both the upper and lower jawbones can help alleviate some of the symptoms of tooth decay and gum disease. Bone mass is important because a minimal amount of bone mass is needed in many restorative dental procedures, especially dental implant placement. If a patient does not have the proper amount of bone mass in the jaw, they are not eligible for these surgeries.

If a patient does not have a viable graft site, then another donor may be used. If this is not an option, a synthetic grafting material may be used which acts like a harvested graft.

What Are the Different Types of Grafts?

The application of the graft remains the same across all types of grafts. The two most widely used grafts are autograft and allograft. Both are used for different situations and have their own unique set of pros and cons.

The autograft bone graft is widely used and entails taking the bone graft from the individual patient. In most cases, these grafts are harvested from either the hip or the pelvic region.

While allografts are not used as frequently as autografts, they are highly recommended. These do not take the grafted tissue from the patient but rather from a cadaver. This tissue is often removed from the cadaver and then stored in what is known as a tissue bank until the date of the procedure.

When Is a Bone Graft Needed?

Patients who have acute symptoms such as pain at the TMJ, issues when speaking, or pain with chewing are recommended to have a bone graft. Some patients might even suffer from not being able to completely close their mouths or completely open them. Bone grafts can help all of these symptoms quickly and easily.
